UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE PURCHASING

PASSIVE LEARNING:  The curriculums for the large majority of Spanish schools in the Medellin area are fill-in-the-blank / worksheet-driven.  These exercises are similar to the DuoLingo approach to language learning, considered aprendizaje pasivo., and are good for vocabulary building and language theory (Spanish knowledge).  These techniques develop reading and writing abilities, but are weak in listening and speaking/conversational skills.

ACTIVE LEARNING:  OLSA students practice and learn Spanish through actually listening, processing and speaking Spanish with native Spanish-speaking teachers.  The result is improved Spanish fluency (not just Spanish knowledge).  This is what is needed if you would like to meet and speak with Colombians at events or on the street.  This concept of learning Spanish through practice in-real-time is called aprendizaje activo and is the preferred method for language learning for those who wish to interact (not text) with native Spanish speakers.

ANALOGY - THE DIFFERENCE

Conversational SpanishOtras Academias  A student enters a bicycle academy and asks for a course to learn how to ride a bicycle.  The instructor tells the student, “Of course! Here, I have two books and five magazines about bicycles.  We will spend the next two years studying how to ride a bicycle”.  After two years, the instructor tells the student, “Today, we finish with the bicycle-riding course.”  The student replies, “But we haven’t ridden any bicycles, yet.  When are we going paseo a bike?”  At that, the instructor claims, “I have given you all of the knowledge you need to ride a bike.  Now, you go figure out how to ride the bike on your own”.

OLSA Internacional – A student enters a bicycle academy and asks for a course to learn how to ride a bicycle. The instructor tells the student, “Of course!  Let’s go outside and get on a bike ahora!!!.”  After two years practicing how to paseo a bike, the student knows how to maneuver, do tricks and is earning a salary using the skills he learned by la práctica de con el instructor.

Learning a language is similar to riding a bike.  To be able to hear, understand and speak a language in real-time, you must physically/orally interact with that language with native speakers.  Yes, at first it is difficult, and brushing up on a little language theory doesn’t hurt, but through actual language la práctica, your ear will get used to new sounds and you will be able to converse in the language, easily.  The more actual practice, the better you will speak and the deeper the conversations you will be able to have.
