While Colombian immigration law under Resolution 5477 states that a student visa application requires a minimum of 10 study hours per week and does not set a legal minimum number of months, the reality on the ground can be very different.

To acquire a Colombian student visa under modern immigration parameters, the student will need to fulfill the following steps:
- Passport: Submit a valid original passport with at least two blank pages.
- Immigration Status: Present the last stamp of entry to Colombia or a document that shows your current immigration status is legally confirmed.
- Photo: Present one digital photo (3 x 5 cm) with a plain white background.
- Financial Solvency: Present bank statements for the last six consecutive months for the person who assumes the economic responsibility of the student.
- Health Insurance: Present proof of international health insurance with a minimum of $60,000 USD coverage for the entire duration of the visa (see your visa agent for quotes).
- Background Check: Present an official, apostilled national criminal background check issued by your home country’s government.
- Full Tuition Payment: Purchase your courses at OLSA International for the full duration of your desired visa. The Colombian government will not consider a student visa application until the courses are paid in full.
- Mandatory Timeline Buffer: Because obtaining an apostilled federal background check takes approximately 6 weeks, and the Cancillería can take up to 4 weeks to review files, all student visa applications must be fully submitted to the government portal at least 60 days prior to your desired course start date or the expiration of your legal tourist stay. OLSA accepts zero liability for immigration complications arising from late or short-notice applications.
Note: OLSA International provides all necessary certified enrollment documents to the student. It is the student’s independent responsibility to apply for the visa on their own or hire an immigration attorney for processing. OLSA works with a number of trusted visa agents and attorneys and is happy to provide a recommendation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Colombia reserves the right to request additional documents.
Application Location Dynamics (Inside Colombia vs. Abroad): Under standard operating procedures, the Cancillería processes files differently based on your physical location at the moment of submission. This carries significant impacts on your transition timeline:
Applying at a Consulate Abroad (Recommended): Files submitted from your home country are processed by localized consular offices. Receiving a government inquiry or an inadmitida notice near the expiration of your tourist stamp can cause immediate immigration status complications, as OLSA cannot permit on-campus classroom attendance without an active, legally verified status.
OLSA International is an accredited educational institution, not an immigration agency, and plays zero role in the submission, legal counseling, or review process of your personal visa file. The choice of visa agent, attorney, or independent submission path is entirely at the discretion and financial responsibility of the student.
Because the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Colombia (Cancillería) exercises absolute sovereign discretionary power (Facultad Discrecional) over visa issuances, OLSA cannot control, influence, or guarantee your final visa outcome. Unexpected disruptions, processing delays, or errors caused by your chosen representative or the government do not invalidate your educational contract or alter our strict non-refundable tuition policies.
