PASSIVE LEARNING:  The curriculums for the large majority of Spanish schools in the Medellin area are fill-in-the-blank / worksheet-driven.  These exercises are similar to the DuoLingo approach to language learning, considered passive learning, and are good for vocabulary building and language theory (Spanish knowledge).  These techniques develop reading and writing abilities, but are weak in listening and speaking skills.

ACTIVE LEARNING:  OLSA students practice and learn Spanish through actually listening, processing and speaking Spanish with native Spanish-speaking teachers.  The result is improved Spanish fluency (not just Spanish knowledge).  This is what is needed if you would like to meet and speak with Colombians at events or on the street.  This concept of learning Spanish through practice in-real-time is called active learning and is the preferred method for language learning for those who wish to interact (not text) with native Spanish speakers.

NOT A COOKIE-CUTTER SCHOOL:  We welcome you to design your own language learning experience and we have plenty of programs to choose from.  Don’t be forced into 20 hours of fill-in-the-blank worksheets at other schools.  Create your own personalized schedule at OLSA.  Take a look at some of the options below:

  • Conversational Spanish Classes for improved Spanish fluency.
  • Private Spanish classes which include grammar and conversation to help polish your Spanish abilities.  These classes are offered in-person and virtually!

Conversational SpanishOther Academies  An student enters a bicycle academy and asks for a course to learn how to ride a bicycle.  The instructor tells the student, “Of course! Here, I have two books and five magazines about bicycles.  We will spend the next two years studying how to ride a bicycle”.  After two years, the instructor tells the student, “Today, we finish with the bicycle-riding course.”  The student replies, “But we haven’t ridden any bicycles, yet.  When are we going ride a bike?”  At that, the instructor claims, “I have given you all of the knowledge you need to ride a bike.  Now, you go figure out how to ride the bike on your own”.

OLSA International – An student enters a bicycle academy and asks for a course to learn how to ride a bicycle. The instructor tells the student, “Of course!  Let’s go outside and get on a bike right now!.”  After two years practicing how to ride a bike, the student knows how to maneuver, do tricks and is earning a salary using the skills he learned by practicing with the instructor.

Learning a language is similar to riding a bike.  To be able to hear, understand and speak a language in real-time, you must physically/orally interact with that language with native speakers.  Yes, at first it is difficult, and brushing up on a little language theory doesn’t hurt, but through actual language practice, your ear will get used to new sounds and you will be able to converse in the language, easily.  The more actual practice, the better you will speak and the deeper the conversations you will be able to have.

OLSA’s Conversational Spanish curriculum designed to help students improve their Spanish fluency. This program, written, recorded and taught by native Spanish speakers, uses themed conversations, stories, videos and other multimedia to present the living Spanish language outside of the grammatical restrictions of a textbook. This is the actual Spanish students will hear and use on the street, in the market, making new friends and participating in events with native Spanish speakers.  These interactive conversation classes are an excellent choice for travelers, expats living in Medellín, and/or a full-time university students looking to gain Spanish fluency in an immersive environment.

Private Spanish classes are one-on-one teacher/student classes.  These classes can be used for help studying Spanish grammar, Spanish conversation, help resolve problem areas in Spanish, prep for an interview, or even at tutoring for high school/university Spanish classes.  Our students use these Spanish classes in three ways:

  1. Many students take Private Spanish classes before they arrive in Colombia to get minds ready for the transition to a Spanish-based life.
  2. As stated before, we are not a cookie-cutter school.  Often students supplement their Conversational Spanish Classes with 1, or 2, Private Spanish Classes.  Due to the intensity, we do not recommend more than two private classes per day.
  3. Some students choose to extend their Spanish learning by taking Private Spanish classes once they return to their country.  This helps them stay sharp for social or work Spanish use.

Can’t come to Colombia?  Have Colombia come to you with our Virtual Semi-Private Spanish Classes!  These highly-popular discounted Spanish classes are designed as a virtual option to our in-person Conversational Spanish Classes.  They are run by levels and have a maximum of four students per class.  They are an excellent way to practice listening, processing and speaking Spanish with native Spanish speakers from the comfort of your own home.

These virtual classes are great for people soon coming to Latin America, people who just left Latin America, people who live in Latin America but can’t get to one of our campuses, business professionals working in the Spanish market, high school/university students, Spanish teachers (always great to polish up with native speakers)!

Are you starting from zero?  Are you struggling with the Spanish subjunctive?  Do you need to know when to use por or para / ser or estar, give directions, understand direct/indirect object pronouns, know how to order a meal / a ticket / a hotel / a taxi?  Would you like to learn some Colombian slang, or even some Colombian history?

OLSA’s new one-week intensive Spanish Workshops are an excellent way to get a deep and practical understanding of how to correctly use Spanish during your stay in Colombia.  Be prepared to interact with others.
